Description
Mapping the New African Diaspora in China: Race and the Cultural Politics of Belonging – eBook PDF
When one thinks of African diasporas, it is possible that their mind will mechanically drift to locations such as America and Europe. But how much is known about the African diaspora in East Asia and, specially , within China, where race is such a politically complex topic?
Based on multi-sited ethnographic research in Nigeria and China, Mapping the New African Diaspora in China, (PDF) explores a new wave of African migration to South China in the context of the development of Sino/African trade relations and the global transmission of racial knowledge. Certainly, grassroots perspectives of Africa/China trade relations are foregrounded through the examination of daily interactions between Africans and rural-to-urban Chinese migrants in numerous informal trade spaces in Guangzhou. These Afro-Chinese encounters have the capacity to not only help disclose the negotiated process of mutual racial learning, but also to subvert hegemonic discourses like Sino/African friendship and white supremacy in delicate ways. Though, as Lan demonstrates within this informative volume, the transformative power of such cross-cultural interactions is strictly limited by cultural differences, language barrier, and the Chinese state’s stringent immigration control policies.
This ebook will appeal to students and scholars in the fields of China/Africa relations, ethnic and race studies, globalization and transnational migration, and urban China studies, along with those from other social science disciplines such as international relations, political science, urban geography, Asian Studies, sociology, African studies, development studies, and cross-cultural communication studies. It may also appeal to non-profit organizations and policymakers involved in providing services and assistance to migrant populations.
